Are Acai Berries a New Superfruit or Health Scam?
Mary Smith | April 13, 2010Have you seen advertisements for a new superfruit called acai? If you have been on the internet at all, you know these are hard to miss. This fruit, from a South American tree, is all over websites. It has caught the attention of many people in the U, S. We all want to feel better, live longer, lose weight, and have more energy. All of these claims, and more, have been made about acai berries. But what is it about these berries if anything, that is better than other fruits we have purchased for years?
We have certainly seen some famous people talking about them. But there have been a few lawsuits as some advertisers went a bit too far when they used those endorsements a part of their ads. And they are showing up in all sorts of places. Now you can even find them in your local grocery store.
There is, of course, some truth to health claims about acai berries. They are fairly low in calories, and provide some protein, fiber, and antioxidants. Are they better than eating more common fruit, like blueberries? Maybe they conitain a higher concentration of antioxidants, but otherwise, that could be a point to argue. But let us just say that it is true to claim that acai berries are healthy.
However, I cannot find any reason to believe that they are a magical superfood that will give us all long life, a slim belly, or improved health. A healthy diet and lifestyle may increase our chance of enjoying these things. So while acai berries can be part of this heathy diet, they are not the only thing we need. In order to live long and prosper, as Vulcans would say, we need to exercise, cut out bad habits, eat a healthy and balanced diet, and also have some good luck.
As smart consumers, you also need to be careful of the way you purchase acai berries. We have seen an increase in consumer complaints, legal investigations, and even prosecutions because of some shady sellers. Many free trial offers were followed up by costly rebills that were hard to cancel. A lot of major credit card companies have refused to process these charges now, but a lot of people have been hurt in the past.
Many online sellers are run by honest and legitimate businesses. Make sure you know your seller before you make a purchase, and before you take advantage of a free trial offer.
