Brilliant Berries And Their Uses

Haylee Hulme | July 17, 2010

Berries are eaten every day by people around the world, as they provide little snacks of refreshing juice and flavour. But berries are so much more than tasty snacks, as many are thought to have other uses too.

Take the acai berry for example; along with the blueberry and cranberry it has gained “superfruit” status.

Acai berry Pronounced ass-eye-ee, the acai berry has grown in popularity in the past few years due to its powerful antioxidant properties. It has been enjoyed in Brazil for much longer than this; often it is put with granola as a source of nutrients. These berries are said to include the essential fatty acids Omega 3, 6, and 9 – as well as other vitamins, minerals, phytosterols and amino acids. The appealing combination of rich nutrients mixed with what is said to be the taste of berries and chocolate is likely why acai is frequently used in smoothies, juices, and capsules across the UK.

Cranberry Another of these berry superfruits is the cranberry. A low-growing perennial, the berries are mostly harvested between September and October. However, they are available all year round in juices, and you can even get hold of frozen cranberries for use in smoothies and puddings. Like the acai berry, cranberries are full of antioxidants and other natural compounds, which make them an ideal choice for the health conscious consumer. When they aren’t used for this reason, they are often spotted in cranberry sauce on the dinner table at Christmas.

Blueberry The blueberry has also become a popular choice for enjoyment on its own or in a range of recipes. The reason blueberries are blue is due to the amount of anthocyanins packed inside, which also results in a large number of antioxidants. Aside from the healthy eating credentials, blueberries are also commonly added to muffins, cakes, sauces, and jams for a splash of colour and tasty treat.

Brazilian Fruits: From Acai To Melon

Haylee Hulme | May 25, 2010

The Latin American country of Brazil is renowned for many parts of it culture. It has flamboyant carnivals, spectacular soccer skills and a divine climate. Its weather and fertile lands make it a haven for fruit production and it’s thanks to this that Brazil is able to supply countries around the world with everything from acai to papaya.

Brazil is currently the world’s third largest exporter of fruit, its main importers being Arabic countries including the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia [1]. Europe also receives much of its fruit from Brazil.

Widely known fruits like apples are Brazil’s biggest export; however more exotic sounding and tasting fruits like acai are gaining in popularity. The acai (pronounced ass-eye-ee) is a small, deep purple berry which comes from the Brazilian rainforests, and is very nutritious. As it is packed with powerful antioxidants called anthocyanins, the acai berry is believed to help fight against the effects of free radicals – cell-damaging particles that studies suggest may even cause cancer [2].

The tree that the acai berry grows on thrives on the banks of the Amazon River, whose rich waters provide daily nutrient replenishment. This plentiful and nutritious fruit has been a staple of the Amazonian diet for centuries, and it is only now that the rest of the world is waking up to its potential [2].

Mango’s are another popular fruit cultivated by the Brazilians. It is a deliciously sweet fruit, with a juicy flesh that is yellow in colour, whilst the skin is usually green with some orange colouration. Remarkably good for health, the mango contains a range of nutrients including iron, Vitamins A, C and E as well as fibre [4]. As well as eating the mango raw, it also tastes great mixed into smoothies and ice creams.

Papayas are another tasty fruit grown in Brazil. They have the consistency of butter and a divinely sweet, tropical flavour. Papayas contain lots of beneficial components such as B vitamins, flavonoids and papain: a digestive enzyme which is thought to have a soothing effect on the stomach [5].

Good Antioxidants Fighter Found In A Tiny Berry

Dr. Mathias Wikenslop | November 22, 2009

Aside from the acai berry being an unsullied, mouth-watering, organically grown fruit- it is also rich with antioxidants. Antioxidants are nutrients as well as substances that slow the oxidation damage to our body.

When the body’s cells consume oxygen, it creates free radicals (or by-products) that can cause a lot of problems to our body. Antioxidants play an important role in preventing, repairing, and removing the damage done by these toxic by-products. Having a daily supplement of antioxidants is the best way known to protect yourself from these harmful free radicals.

When free radicals are left unchecked, they can wreak all kinds of havoc to our bodies. Free radicals are responsible for the breakdown of our DNA as well as causing cancer. These by-products can invade our cells and cause them to break down or even worse stop functioning all together.

Depending on where the damage was created by these toxic radicals, the range of destruction can lead to neurological damage all the way to hormonal problems. The acai berry produces enough antioxidants that when taken as a regular part of your diet can prevent and fight off these free radicals.

Studies have revealed for years that when antioxidants are taken as part of a regular diet, the body has the ability to repair, and maintain resistance to free radicals as well future attacks.

Dr. Perricone is the one who introduced the mainstream audience to this amazing fruit by writing a book entitled, the Perricone Promise. In this book he writes that the acai berry is the most perfect food on the planet.

When it comes to a food that will make you look and feel young, Dr. Perricone says that the acai berry has all of the ingredients needed to accomplish this. Also, when looking for a diet that will revitalize your health and slow the aging process Dr. Perricone says look no further than the acai fruit berry.

Acai berry is categorized as a super food because it contains all the nutrition your body needs in fighting dangerous by-products in the body like free radicals. Be sure to research this amazing fruit further if you are looking for a diet that will provide your body with the strength needed to fight and remove these harmful toxins.

The acai berry is the perfect food to improve overall health, reduce aging, and fighting free radicals and could be just the missing supplement your body needs to creating the new you.

A group of scientist in Arkansas found that fruits that are dark purplish in color such as the acai berry fruit, could possibly hold the key to preventing obesity.

The scientist concluded through animal studies that the extract of the fruit is more effective than actually eating the fruit when it comes to weight loss.

Ronald L. Prior and colleagues, who conducted the study, found that past research has shown that the pigments, called anthocyanins, prevent obesity in laboratory mice fed a high-fat diet.

The mice also were reported to show other healthy benefits from the fruit. Anthocyanins are found in acai berries blackberries, purple corn, and many other purple based foods.

The mice were fed for two months a high calorie diet on top of drinking water and extracted anthocyanins from acai berry gained less weight and had a lower body fat level than the other mice.

Anthocyanins fed as the whole blueberry did not prevent and could have possibly increased obesity, the study found. However, feeding purified anthocyanins from blueberries or strawberries reduced obesity.

The article “Whole Berries versus Berry Anthocyanins: Interactions with Dietary Fat Levels in the C57BL/6J Mouse Model of Obesity” can be read in full in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

According to the USDA, Colorful pigments found in the skin of blueberries, strawberries and other fruits and vegetables may help prevent obesity, according to recent animal studies.

For the past 30 years,Dr. Mathias Wikenslop has been researching all of the wondrous benefits of the acai berry. He has a detailed acai berry benefits website where he goes into detail about the best acai berry products on the market today. He also has a acai berry benefits website that has free information on everything that is related to the acai berry
